Required documents to drive in New Zealand

To drive in New Zealand, you must have one of following documents. Please check before you travel.
※You are required to present your passport if your nationality is other than New Zealand.

Not holding required documents regards as ‘driving wihtout licence’, you will not be able to drive in New Zealand.
When you hire a vehicle with OTS Rent-a-car,  your documents must be all VALID and ORIGINAL(Photocopy and expired documents will not be accepted).

1. New Zealand driver’s licence (Full)

You are able to drive in New Zealand if you hold valid New Zealand driver’s licence.
However, we DO NOT accept car rental with Learner licence or Restricted licence, your licence must be FULL licence.
Please check your class at CLASS/ENDO (1,2,3,4, or 5 must be possessed) and your expiration at EXPIRES on back side of your licence.

2. Your country’s driver’s licence written in English (Full licence)

You are able to drive in New Zealand with your country’s local driver’s licence if it is all written in English.
However, your driver’s licence driving class restrictions will be applied same in New Zealand.
We DO NOT accept car rental with Learner licence or Restricted licence, your licence must be FULL licence.
Please check your expiration/validity period before traveling.

3. Your contry’s driver’s licence written in NON-English + International Driving Permit issued in accordance with a United Nations Convention

International Driving Permit (IDP) issued in accordance with a United Nations (such as Geneva Convention) can be a translation of your local driver’s licence, and you are allowed to drive in New Zealand by holding it together with your country’s driver’s licence. Please check the expiration/validity period of both your driver’s licence and IDP.

Types of vehicle you are allowed to drive differs depending on your licence.

B-Normal Cars: Up to 8-seater cars

D-Large Passenger Cars: 10-seater or more (WD Calss)

For passengers renting a 10-seater car (WD class), make sure that a stamp is placed on the class D. "You will be treated as "“driving without license” if you are driving 10-seater car without having D stamp.

International Driving Permit issued in private organisation or private enterprise (IDL / IAA / KIDA / IDD / IADA / ITDL / TIDL etc…)

At OTS Rent A Car, we decline car rental with international driving permits other than IDP issued in accordance with United Nations Convention. Please apply “International Driving Permit (IDP)” approved by United Nations Convention such as Geneva Convention in advance, and do not forget to bring your local driver’s license with you.

4. Your contry’s driver’s licence written in NON-English + an Official English transration of your driver’s licence

You are able to drive in New Zealand by carrying an official English translation of your driver’s licence and your driver’s licence with you.
The translation must be provided by:

  • A NZ Transport Agency authorised translation service

  • Diplomatic representative at a high commission, embassy or consulate
  • A translation document issued by a Notary Public Office in China.
